Abstract

The exoskeleton of crustaceans provides a suitable substrate for marine macroalgae to develop epibiosys. Between the years 2018 and 2023, 58 individuals of crustaceans with macroalgae on their exoskeletons were collected in six locations in Santiago de Cuba. Based on this information, a matrix of macroalgae abundance per crustacean species was created for analysis using the bipartite package in R. The interaction network showed 25 epizoic macroalgae growing on the exoskeleton of six crustacean species, with 55 interactions. The macroalga Lobophora variegata (J.V.Lamouroux) Womersley ex E.C.Oliveira is recorded for the first time in Cuban waters on Mithraculus sculptus (Lamarck, 1818). The macroalgae-crustaceans network exhibited low specialization and high robustness. These characteristics are typical of non-obligatory mutualistic interactions. The interactions are characterized by being dominated by peripheral species, with these species having 82% of the interactions within their own module. The remaining 18% of species are key to the network structure as they link different modules. The values of specialization, nestedness, and modularity correspond to the vulnerability and generality values found in the macroalgae-crustaceans network. These values confirm that epizoic macroalgae are generalists in marine macroalgae beds.
